Choosing Christ Over Power

Dear Hana Mission Family Members,

I am writing to express my deep concerns regarding the current political landscape and the stance of the evangelical church. Having been raised in a Christian family, I have never doubted my heritage; however, I now find myself profoundly conflicted.

I find my views increasingly aligned with Pope Leo XIV, who recently stated that "true strength comes from serving life, not from displays of power." It is troubling to see many evangelical churches in both the United States and South Korea remain silent or offer support for the current administration and the ongoing conflict, including the war against Iran and the bombing of a school.

I feel compelled to state my position clearly: I do not support this war or this administration, and I cannot align myself with churches that pray for military victory in this context.

In the name of Jesus, we are called to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us (Matthew 5:44). If we are only kind to those who look, think, and believe like we do, what more are we doing than others? While many claim to believe in Jesus and attend church, true membership in the family of God is defined by following His teachings:

"44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous."

May the Lord bring His justice and peace to us all.

현재의 정치적 상황과 복음주의 교회의 입장에 대해 깊은 우려를 전하고자 이 글을 씁니다. 저는 기독교 가정에서 자라나며 제 신앙의 뿌리에 대해 한 번도 의심해 본 적이 없었습니다. 그러나 지금 저는 깊은 갈등 속에 놓여 있습니다.

최근 “진정한 힘은 권력의 과시가 아니라 생명을 섬기는 데서 나온다”라고 말한 교황 레오 14세의 견해에 점점 더 공감하게 됩니다. 그런데 미국과 한국의 많은 복음주의 교회들이 현재의 행정부와 ongoing conflict—이란과의 전쟁, 그리고 학교 폭격과 같은 일들—에 대해 침묵하거나 심지어 지지하는 모습을 보며 매우 우려스럽습니다.

저는 제 입장을 분명히 밝히고자 합니다. 저는 이 전쟁과 이 행정부를 지지하지 않으며, 이러한 상황에서 군사적 승리를 위해 기도하는 교회들과도 뜻을 같이할 수 없습니다.

예수님의 이름으로 우리는 원수를 사랑하고 우리를 박해하는 자들을 위해 기도하라는 부르심을 받았습니다 (마태복음 5:44). 만일 우리가 우리와 같은 모습, 생각, 믿음을 가진 사람들에게만 친절하다면, 우리가 다른 사람들보다 더 나은 것이 무엇이겠습니까? 많은 사람들이 예수를 믿고 교회에 다닌다고 말하지만, 하나님의 가족에 속한 참된 기준은 그분의 가르침을 따르는 데 있습니다:

“44 나는 너희에게 이르노니 너희 원수를 사랑하며 너희를 박해하는 자를 위하여 기도하라.45 이같이 한즉 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 자녀가 되리니, 이는 하나님이 그 해를 악인과 선인에게 비추시며 비를 의로운 자와 불의한 자에게 내려주심이라.”

주님께서 우리 모두에게 그의 정의와 평화를 이루어 주시기를 기도합니다.
